We need a clipboard for 2 reasons. First, the layout of the room allows me to see all of my students computer screens so I can monitor their work. This means that when I am giving instruction, students have to turn their chairs around to take notes and won’t have a table top surface to write on. The clipboard gives them a surface to write on. Having students turn away from their computers also ensures that students won’t be distracted by playing on their computers when I am giving instruction. Second, we often do collaborative work where students are moving from one part of the room to another. Having a clipboard vs. a cumbersome 3-ring binder makes it easier for students to move from one table to the next and work without taking up too much space. I highly recommend low-profile clips because they fit in backpacks more efficiently.

Loose leaf paper is sometimes needed when taking notes, sketching, or brainstorming. We don’t need a binder or folder for this class so feel free to leave the paper you will use in this class in a binder/folder from another class. Just please make sure to have that binder/folder with paper in it when you come to my class.
We only use wooden pencils in my class for a couple of reasons. First, we do a lot of sketching and brainstorming where having the ability to erase is valuable. Finally, due to the history of students taking apart pens and mechanical pencils and leaving their parts all around the classroom, they are no longer allowed in my room.
